Animalife

Quinta-feira, 23.01.14

Tornando-nos associados (pouco mais que €2/mês);

Tornando-nos Padrinho ou Madrinha de uma família carenciada;

Tornando-nos voluntários nas várias áreas de actuação da associação;

Ligando para o número de valor acrescentado  - 760 300 540;

Fazendo um donativo pontual para o NIB 0010 0000 47158930001 79;

Animalife

Defending animal rights is a cause that is no stranger to me. Many will remember a few campaigns that I partnered with, and my stand on circuses, bullfights, the current laws, animal testing, anything really that is connected with how I believe these creatures should be perceived and treated in today's society. It just so happens that many of the portuguese NGOs that are engajed in such matters are also heavily invested in promoting vegetarianism and veganism alike. They have every right to do so, but maybe because many of their most notorious activists are following religions like hinduism and budhism, and diverse forms of pantheism (and certain ideologies that I'm not in the least interested in), I feel a certain discomfort when I'm asked to participate in a more active and public discussion on the issue of animal rights. I'm so distant from these religious views many of them passionately defend, and from certain antropomorphical views of Nature, that I actually feel like an imposter in their midst. I repeat - they do have the right to think the way they do, but I just don't share these views with them. Today, though, I want to tell you about an ONG that stands out from the rest - even if they possibly harbor activists like the ones I described before.

On January 11th, in Lisbon, the first Center for Gathering and Distribution of Animal Food for Families in Need was inaugurated. Spread out in a few well-prepared rooms - wharehouses, meeting and training rooms, reception and interview rooms - Animalife has only been around for 2 years and is already doing amazing work. They've received so many requests and attention that even Caritas (an international agency that supports long-term development programs in impoverished communities in Africa, Asia, East Timor, Latin America, Indigenous Australia and the Pacific) has aknowledged their original and prestigious worth. Led by Rodrigo Livreiro, a little over 50 volunteers make sure a simple plan like this comes true: instead of just focusing on capturing, neutering and sending animals off for adoption, why not think about what causes the abandonment in the first place? Is it that every animal that ends up on the street has come from a household of evil people that just kick them out? Not really. What we're sure of is that these animals often end up on the street following a harrowing choice between feeding your family and feeding your dog. It's hard to believe, but many do choose to go without food for a while to be able to feed their pet, and when it happens that this person is on some kind of subsidy from the State, it looks really bad for those social workers to see that their money is also being used to buy cat food. And when you face eviction because you started with a cat, but coudn't afford to spay it and so you end up with 4 or 5, or 10, it is easier to just "open the door and let them all out". It's also easy to judge these people...but we have to try and understand what goes on behind closed doors.

The Animalife system is simple, and it does have a few mechanisms to prevent abuse, being that the best and also the saddest one of all is that people are very embarassed to ask for help, and when they do it's because they're at the end of their rope. I think it's very smart to look at the problem at its origin and also at it's conclusion, and it should also be noted that Animalife makes sure they work in connection with other animal protection agencies and ONGs, the ones that do have a lot to show in terms of capturing, neutering and finding adoptive homes for their pets. This way, we all benefit from their macroscopic view of the problem. Yes, municipal pounds should spay and neuter animals; yes, veterinary care should be public also; yes, there's still a lot do in terms of changing mentalities on animal rights in this country - but let's be grateful that someone is taking the iniciative, and instead of just complaining about what's wrong, let's help Animalife in any of these ways:

By becoming members (a little over €2/month);

By becoming Sponsors of one of these Families in Need;

By becoming a volunteer (there's a lot to be done);

By donating through BPI bank in Portugal (PT50 0010 0000 47158930001 79)

Spreading the word and visiting them on www.animalife.pt.

I think I left you with some ideas on what to do if these issues concern you, but I do want to add that I was truly inspired by their example of sacrifice and dedication. I know some think they're fighting a hopeless cause, but they are heroes in my book. Ok, are you just going to sit there?
