Querida Mãe

Sexta-feira, 25.04.14

Perdoe-me, mãe.

Today is Freedom Day, and my Mother would be turning 78. It's hard to imagine her at that age , and maybe it makes sense that it is so - she never really wanted to be anything but young. It's not criticism, it's a fact .

She was a woman who never went unnoticed , most of all because she was so different from all  the others ... myself included. When God made her, He broke the mold. It's a figure of speech, of course ( God allways breaks the mold) and I don't mean to say that she was perfect, but I wouldn't choose any other to hold me in her arms. And somehow, even when she failed us or anyone else, there was something moving about her... I can't explain. Her nature was somewhat impetuous and melancholic, which made her a very unpredictable person. For a child, this isn't always easy... but now I'm older , and I can understand her better. One of the things I remember most about her is that she didn't hate anyone. She was often deeply hurt but others, and many times they were the ones that were closer to her, but there wasn't an ounce of hatred towards this or that person. But she sure wasn't perfect. Still, I'd give half of me so that she wouldn't have left so soon...at the time , it was a bigger blow than I thought I could bear. Today , it is a bigger blow than I think I can bear. But I bear it. After all , her voice is often in my dreams, and still , when I say the word Mom , the mixture of scents that made her skin always comes to mind. Gone is the whole person, but God left me with some bits of her in my heart ...

The book We Have Only One Mother, compiled by Diamantina Rodrigues in 2013 and edited by Verso da Kapa, convened a series of testymonies of celebrities and their mothers. Here's part of the text I wrote :

"For 44 years I've borne the image of another woman, and the comparison has never favored me. Mom was more, much more than any other, and she always had words that filled people's hearts. It was from your heart, Mother, that everything you did has flowed, and it was from it also that we have all proceeded...In your presence everyone seemed less bright, more predictable. It was also from your heart that you nursed me , and we both liked our nest so much that our hug went on for five full years. An aberration, some think...a blessing, I say.

Five babies came into the world through you. Knowing this my admiration grows, not because the best mothers have with many children, but because every time a child is made, the mother gives up a little bit of herself - did you know that the baby's brain holds a portion of his mother's own cells ? - These pieces we lose forever, but you never seemed to be missing them, and there always seemed to be more of you to give away after each one of us was born - and how difficult were those births, until the very last one!

We didn't talk much about these things, but I do know you had  dreams that were never fulfilled. Mostly, you did what was expected of you  and when the day came that you decided it wasn't going to be like this anymore, many people judged you. I was one of them. Please forgive me, Mother. Please understand that all a child wants is for their mother to never change, to never show complete independence and autonomy, let alone to think of turning around, closing the door, and leaving us behind. Please understand that I did not understand.»

It's true, I didn't. In fact...I think that in some way neither did she. At a distance now, I realize that realize that mothers often feel like they're being split into so many different directions, in tiny little indistinct portions, and their hearts are filled with things they can't express, and that that silence is both wrong and right...above all, I wish I could be telling her this, and not you.

Maria Helena was her name , and Nat King Cole was one of her favorite singers... so I made this little photo collage that represents nearly 54 years of life. Happy Birthday , Mom!
